USPA NEWS - Donald Cormier Vice President of Northumberland Ferries Limited said, "It feels good to have two vessels back in service during the peak tourism season. It supports local economies, creates employment for the area and is an essential means of transportation to and from Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia."
Northumberland Ferries Limited issued a statement Friday August 19th, which said, the MV Saaremaa 1 ferry will be conducting non-scheduled "load-and-go" departures Saturday, August 20th and Sunday August 21st between the Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island and Caribou, Nova Scotia, route. Beginning, Monday, August 22nd, the MV Saaremaa 1 will make three round trips daily, with the MV Confederation operating on its normal schedule.
The new ferry has been docked at the terminal in Caribou, Nova Scotia, since making the journey from Trois-Rivières, Quebec, after the fire aboard MV Holiday Island on July 22nd. Northumberland Ferries has spent the last few weeks making sure the replacement vessel is compatible with the loading and unloading facilities at its docks on either side of the Northumberland Strait. It also took some time to train existing Northumberland Ferries crews who will work on the new vessel.
Built in Norway in 2010, the MV Saaremaa 1 is just under 100m in length and boasts the capacity to accommodate 110 cars plus 12 trucks. The ferry can host 600 passengers and has over 300 seats. The ship has a cruising speed of approximately 16 knots. The onboard experience includes a cafeteria and a café with some amazing panoramic views for capturing those epic photographs.
According to the schedule posted on the Northumberland Ferries Limited website, between August 23, to September 5, 2022, sailings will be as follows: Departures from Wood Islands , Prince Edward Island will be at 7:00, 10:00, 12:00, 13:30, 16:00, 17:00, and 19:30.
